Job Description Summary

This position supervises the daily activities of the Boiler and Refrigeration maintenance crew to ensure maximum productivity and plant reliability. This position will be heavily involved in the operation and maintenance of the plant’s Boiler as well as the Ammonia Refrigeration system and will have specific duties in the PSM program.

Job Description

Roles:

  • A leader, an administrator, and a communicator.
  • Responsible for the effectiveness of the crew.
  • Committed to the quantity and priority of work necessary to ensure the reliability of the Plant. 
  • Serves as a key communicator.
  • Coordinates fulfillment of employee training needs.
  • Ensures work force effectiveness by eliminating potential for delays and by setting expectations for quality, duration and feedback to craft persons.

Responsibilities:

  • Promotes a safe working environment and safe work practices by:
  • Ensuring that meaningful safety meetings are conducted with the crew.
  • Identifying and eliminating safety hazards in the workplace.
  • Supporting plant safety program. 
  • Striving to improve the safety performance of the maintenance craft persons through counseling and training.
  • Setting expectations for housekeeping in the shop and on the job site and following up.
  • Ensuring that unused materials are returned to stock when jobs are completed.
  • Ensuring compliance inspections are completed.

  • Handles administrative responsibilities by:
  • Completing all required paperwork accurately including time cards, completed work orders, Precision Maintenance and Reliability Forms, Preventive Maintenance Checklists and Permits, etc.
  • Setting expectations and completing performance evaluations with employees on an annual basis.
  • Disciplining employees if required.

  • Manages work force by:
  • Managing safety, quality, duration, cost and thoroughness of the craft person’s work.
  • Identifying and enforcing expectations and minimum acceptance criteria for the quality of work.
  • Providing technical assistance to the maintenance craft persons.
  • Handling craft persons’ concerns.
  • Identifying and developing training for continuously improving the skills of the craft persons.
  • Evaluating the craft person’s job performance and developing and implementing appropriate measures for improvement.

  • Ensures the effective use of maintenance resources by:
  • Working with crew Planner to meet crew needs.
  • Working with Planner and area production leader to schedule daily activities for the area crew and backshift.
  • Generates printed work orders to distribute to the crew for scheduled work.
  • Ensures work schedule and work orders are posted
  • Matches craftsmen with skills required to do the work.
  • Schedules crew to develop job skills.
  • Developing, coordinating, and executing plans for emergency work.
    • Challenges emergency work that disrupts the daily schedule.
    • Follows up on job overruns and interruptions.
      • Holding employees accountable for quality, productivity and efficiency.
      • Audit job site periodically to ensure work is progressing as planned.
      • Keeping the Area Production Leader properly abreast of barriers which may impact the weekly schedule.
      • Ensuring that the next job is always ready.
      • Managing overtime and making overtime assignments.
      • Identifying ways to reduce maintenance costs.
      • Assisting with the coordination of contractor work in the area.

  • Becomes a key person in the communications process by:
  • Understanding who the customers are and what their needs are  and developing a strong relationship with operations.
  • Communicating frequently with Operations, Engineering, the Production Area Leader, the Maintenance Manager, and Planner.
  • Reviewing shift logs for action items and communicating with them as appropriate.
  • Attending daily production meeting to identify potential maintenance problems.

  • Supports and promotes reliability by:
  • Identifying reliability issues and acting to correct.
  • Involves project/reliability engineer when appropriate.
  • Discusses the cause of equipment failure with craft persons.
  • Handling suggestions by craft persons, operators and management personnel for equipment reliability and maintenance efficiency issues.
  • Promoting and leading in Root Cause Failure analysis.
  • Serving as a technical resource for eliminating “bad actors”.
  • Supporting the Preventive Maintenance/Predictive Maintenance (PM/PdM) program by ensuring the timeliness and high quality of preventive and predictive maintenance work.
  • Being a supporter of Precision Maintenance and striving to achieve a state of Precision Maintenance in all his area equipment. 

Measuring Results:

  • Compliance to daily schedule.
  • Percent Break in Work
  • Overtime performance.
  • Safety statistics.
  • Percent equipment in vibration alarm.
  • Preventive Maintenance/Predictive Maintenance (PM/PdM) route compliance.
  • Budget Compliance

Qualifications:

  • 4-year degree in engineering, food science or related field preferred, plus 1 year minimum experience OR…
  • 4 years minimum maintenance, engineering or supervisory experience in the food processing industry.
  • Boiler and Refrigeration experience preferred
  • SAP experience preferred
  • Strong PC skills, to include Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to support a 24-hour a day, 7 days per week operation.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb steps & ladders and work in variable work environments

Basic & Preferred Qualifications

Qualifications:

A reasonable annual estimate of the range for this role based on the variables previously mentioned is: $68,780.00 - $103,180.00
