Job Description Summary

The Ingredient Deck & Rail Production Technician performs production procedures required to meet the daily transfer and pumping plans. This cross functional role is responsible for maintaining major/minor bins, rework bins, silos, bulk railcar unloading, bulk truck pumping, and supporting ingredient transfers. The technician must ensure continuous material flow, safe operation, accurate documentation, and compliance with all production schedules.

Job Description

Ingredient Deck Responsibilities

Silo/Bin Filling & Transfer Operations

  • Fill major, minor, and rework bins per the daily transfer plan.

·         Maintain minimum bin inventory levels at the following minimum levels.

    • Major Bins

    • Set Levels: Major 1 – 16,000 lbs.; Major 2 – 8,000 lbs.; Major 3 – 8,000 lbs.; Major 7 – 8,000 lbs.

    • Supervisor‑Managed Levels: Major 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 – Maintain at Supervisor/Lead direction

    • Minor Bins

    • Set Levels: Minor 1 – 8,000 lbs.; Minor 2 – 8,000 lbs.; Minor 3 – 8,000 lbs.; Minor 5 – 8,000 lbs.

    • Supervisor‑Managed Levels: Minor 4, 6, 7 – Maintain at Supervisor/Lead direction

  • Maximize transfer efficiency by using up to five transfer blowers and seven transfer hoppers simultaneously.

  • Coordinate rework bin usage.

  • Coordinate with warehouse when Crane 1 is down to ensure ingredients don’t run out.

  • Be able to manage your breaks and lunch to maximize transfer efficiency.

  • Keep walkie stacker charging when not in use and complete beginning/end‑of‑shift inspection sheets.

Ingredient Handling & Material Flow

  • Direct forklift drivers to stage ingredients quickly and efficiently.

  • Maintain organization and ensure bins are kept full through multitasking and break management.

  • Inspect grates, hoppers, and transfer areas at the start and end of shift.

Rail Operations Responsibilities

Railcar & Bulk Truck Unloading

Under the direction of the Production Lead or Team Leader Area Production charge the bulk silos with ingredients according to the daily pumping plan. Includes the pumping of bulk railcars and coordinating the pumping of bulk trucks.

  • Pump bulk railcars and coordinate bulk truck unloading per the daily pumping plan.

  • Maintain minimum silo inventory levels

  • Bulk Silo Minimum Inventory Levels

  • S1100 180k, S1200 180k, S1300 320k, S1500 250k, S1600 315k, S1700 315k, S1900 250k.

  • S1400, S1800, S13010, S13020 = N/A (truck unload only).

  • Ability to maximize railcar pumping efficiency by utilizing all 3 railcar unload blowers simultaneously.

  • Complete the pumping of all railcars within the time parameters as follows:

  • IG0017 <12 hrs, IG0006 <10 hrs, IG0320 <8 hrs, IG0357 <8 hrs, IG0201 <12 hrs total pump time

  • Ability to maintain railcar unload pumping pressures above 13psi on average.

  • Able to completely aerate a railcar in less than 8 hours.

  • Sample all newly placed railcars within the same shift.

Rail Coordination & Safety

  • Coordinate railcar switching, communicate with BNSF during switching, and ensure proper lineups.

  • Remain in the unload area during switching.

  • Safely use rail‑specific equipment such as portable railcar ladders and winches.

Record Keeping (Both Areas)

  • Accurately ticketing and scanning all ingredients and bulk tickets

  • Turn in all scanned tickets at end of shift (every ticket must be accounted for).

  • Interaction with the HMI computer is required. Enter inventory and process data via HMI systems.

  • Maintain railcar/bulk truck logs, including pump times, delays, sampling, and extended on‑site details for more than 2 hours.

  • Complete required logs for ingredient deck operations, including walkie stacker sheets.

  • Must be able to completely fill out all railcar and bulk truck paperwork.

Housekeeping, GMPs & Policy Compliance

  • Follow GMPs, HACCP requirements, allergen policies, housekeeping and all food safety rules.

  • Comply with all safety regulations, including Lockout and Confined Space procedures. Maintain clean, orderly deck, unload area, silo pad, and equipment.

  • Cap hoses and fittings when not in use; store tools properly.

  • Report accidents, unsafe conditions, defective equipment immediately.

  • Keep the railcar unload area, bulk truck unload area, and silo pad (including silo interiors) neat, clean, and orderly.

  • Other sanitation duties as required to maintain a clean and safe environment.

  • Complete non-rail-related tasks when necessary.

 Additional Skills & Expectations

  • Troubleshoot both ingredient transfer and rail unload systems with minimal help.

  • Use FIFO for all ingredient transfers and railcar pumping order.

  • Strong multitasking and planning ability across both operational areas.

  • Maintain high attention to detail and accuracy when following instructions.

  • Communicate shift updates to operations and oncoming technicians.

  • Complete non‑deck and non‑rail tasks when required.

  • Ability to pass gas mask fit testing and safely handle/dispose of Phostoxin when required.

Basic & Preferred Qualifications

Position Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent; or related experience/training.

  • Basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide).

  • Experience in food manufacturing is preferred.

  • Ability to read/interpret formulas, safety rules, SOPs, and manuals. Also, ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to retrieve data from a computer HMI (Human Machine Interface).

  • Must pass forklift test if required; cross-training expected.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods; climb ladders; safely lift 50 lbs. regularly and over 100 lbs. occasionally with assistance.

  • Ability to work in dusty, chemical, or high-exposure environments around moving equipment and forklifts.

  • Will be required to cross-train in other production positions

  • Must be self-driven and able to occasionally work in high, precarious places, and under minimal supervision while maintaining position expectations.
