Job Description Summary

As the Summer Ag Field Assistant, you will be responsible for the supervision of a 4 – 6 person field sampling crew. You will assist the field department personnel in scouting potato fields, field/harvest sample collection, sample analysis and pre-harvest potato storage inspection, preparation of detailed reports on field conditions and sampling programs (e.g. soil sampling, stem counts, updating maps), support sanitation and housekeeping activities at company storages, and research and other projects as necessary. The Agriculture team is essential in assisting the business in achieving its production goals.

About The Role
  • Location: Taber, Alberta
  • Full-time, Hourly
  • Schedule: Monday-Friday (8am-4pm) Must be available to work flexible hours during the growing & sampling season, as well as some weekends when necessary.
  • Reports to: Agriculture Operations Specialist
As the Summer Ag Field Assistant, you'll...
  • Maintain and promote safe work practices at all times and participate in safety programs.
  • Assist with field scouting, including preparation of detailed reports of field conditions.
  • Dig, bag and deliver potato samples to plant during growing and harvest season.
  • Update field maps.
  • Assist in potato storage inspections, including preparation of detailed reports of findings and recommendations.
  • Provide supervision, training, and leadership to sampling crews to ensure employees are performing assigned work properly.
  • Support sanitation and housekeeping activities at company storages.
  • Complete all reports required for the Co-op Program, if applicable.
  • Inspect automotive equipment, reporting any needed repair or service work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor.

Basic & Preferred Qualifications

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • High School diploma
  • Enrollment in Bachelor's degree (B. A.) program at a University, or Agriculture Diploma program from a College co-op program, is strongly recommended.
  • Or one to two years of related experience and/or training.

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, you are regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell. You are required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. You must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, and outdoor weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; extreme cold; extreme heat; and risk of electrical shock.

Language Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to read and comprehend MSDS sheets, simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one or group situations to other employees of the organization.
